Four Shillings Short, the husband/wife duo of Aodh Og O’Tuama from Cork, Ireland and Christy Martin from California, bring together music, stories and folklore from the Celtic lands to celebrate the Ancient Celtic Bonfire festival of Samhain, known as Féile na Marbh (the Feast of the Dead). Samhain (pronounced 'sow-in' meaning 'the Summer's end') marks the end of harvest, beginning of Winter and the Celtic New Year. Traditionally celebrated at the end of October/beginning of November it is the origin of Halloween/All Hallows Eve, All Souls Day and Dia de los Muertos. It is believed that on Samhain or 'Ancestor night', the border between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest. Candles are lit at the graves of loved ones, offerings of food and drink left out for the Ancestors and bonfires lit throughout the countryside. Many of our modern day customs are based on Samhain including ghost stories, Halloween costumes, bobbing for apples, and the jack-o-lantern.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy is hosting a talk on The James Webb Space Telescope Mission, in honor of the 50th Anniversary of UW's own Wyoming Infrared Observatory.  Speaker Matt Greenhouse is an ISIM Project Scientist with NASA and UW PhD graduate.  The Webb is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. It is the largest space telescope ever constructed and is giving humanity its first high-definition view of the infrared universe.   

The talk will be Friday, October 2, from 4-5 pm, in Classroom Building Room 133, free and open to the public.

From October 2–4, the Wyoming Alliance for Environmental Education and Audubon Rockies will host a gathering at Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp in Dubois. Educators from across the state will come together to connect, share ideas, and explore new strategies for teaching and inspiring others about the environment.

Wild Fish Slow Food Film Fest explores the connections between water, fish, community-led conservation, and sustainable foodways. The first half will include local and regional films from the Upper Snake River Basin, from the Snake River Headwaters to the Lower 4 Snake River dams. The second half will feature dam removals in the Klamath River, Atlantic salmon conservation in Iceland, the fight against the Pebble Mine, and indigenous conservation leadership. The family-friendly evening will conclude with a panel discussion of local, regional, and national conservation and food sustainability changemakers. Come for the films and stay for the raffles, door prizes, partner booths, children’s book signing, and food tastings!

Stop by the Expedition Island Park & Pavilion in Green River to view Wyoming Public Media's Wyoming 250 Photo Contest Exhibit opening reception! The event features a presentation by Jessica Flock, educator and paddler.

Jessica will discuss the John Wesley Powell Expedition and its 150th anniversary event.

After the talk, guests can enjoy light refreshments and view the "Wyoming's History Through Listeners' Eyes" photo exhibit. (View the virtual exhibit online). The exhibit will travel around Wyoming throughout 2026.

Free and open to the public, the talk starts at 6 pm at the Expedition Island Pavilion. Stop by for refreshments and free sonic bison ear buds! All are welcome.
