The advocacy group Friends of the Earth says in fiscal year 2024, the U.S. Department of Agriculture spent $4.8 billion on food for school meals, food banks and tribal communities. Almost half of that went to just 25 companies.

The lapse affected about about 7,500 Public Health Service veterans and 500 military retirees from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It's largely due to the length of the shutdown and a funding oversight.

The Gun Violence Data Hub examined firearm suicide rates and found across the country, they are the highest among people 70 years of age and older.
