Wyoming’s Powder River Basin

Representative Mark Jennings (R-Sheridan), a member of the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, is circulating a letter among lawmakers asking Gov. Mark Gordon to call a special session. It’s the second such call in three months.

State Rep. Cyrus Western and U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman have criticized the nation's largest freight railroad about a decline in these shipments, which they say has cost the state more than $100 million last year. It comes as the Class I railroads, of which BNSF is one, have struggled with hiring and retention amid issues with attendance policies, among others.

The Fort Union Industrial Park northeast of Gillette will host the soon-to-be constructed facility, which is owned by Atlas Carbon and seeks to produce products, such as bricks and construction materials, made from Powder River Basin coal. Other stakeholders include the UK-based engineering and consulting company Wood, University of Wyoming's School of Energy Resources, and Polaris Asset Corporation.
