Speaker of the House Steve Harshman convinced the House to take another step towards school safety.
During a discussion on the House version of the budget bill, it approved a Harshman amendment that would set aside $5 million to be given to the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security to be used as a way for school districts to hire uniformed officers.
"Counties, cities and towns could apply on a matching basis to hire a post certified school resource officer. I'm not talking about a retired person coming back and standing by the door, I'm talking about a school resource officer who actually works for the county or the city," Harshman said.
He added that constituents continue to be worried about school safety and he hopes it's a step in the right direction. The Senate will have to agree to the amendment before it is officially included in the budget.
