Yellowstone National Park has released body camera footage from the 4th of July shooting in Canyon Village. The incident left one officer injured and 28-year-old Samson Lucas Fussner dead.

A “be on the lookout” alert issued around 2 A.M. on July 4 said Samson Fussner had taken a woman hostage at gunpoint and threatened suicide by cop. The 28 year old died later that day following an armed altercation that drew more than 20 law enforcement rangers to protect visitors and staff in Canyon Village in Yellowstone National Park.

A person is dead after a gunfire exchange with law enforcement rangers in Yellowstone National Park on July 4. The park says there are no active threats to the public.

Earlier this year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched a data collection project to gather more information about missing and murdered cases involving Native Americans throughout Wyoming. Over a 90-day period, the agency received 35 tips, including four homicide cases and three missing persons cases. They’d all been previously reported to law enforcement and investigated already.

At a press conference in Fort Washakie on February 8, the FBI announced a new initiative to gather more data about Native Americans who’ve gone missing or been murdered in cases that haven’t been closed. The agency is seeking tips from the public to better understand what the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP) crisis looks like in the state and what resources the agency can contribute to solving cases.

The FBI in New Mexico recently released a public list of almost 180 missing Indigenous people throughout the state and Navajo Nation. They’re hoping that groundwork could be a model around the Mountain West and the nation to create similar lists.

Shanaw Jo Bell of Mill Creek was found April 10. While feral dogs were present, Fremont County Coroner's office will release the official cause of death in a few weeks. Tribes have not both approved dog ordinance.
