Teton Pass Asks Recreationers To Practice Social Distancing

Wyoming Department of Transportation

The call for social distancing in the state is leading many people to the outdoors. But a high number of people are going to the Teton Pass west of Jackson, which is causing some public health concerns.

"With the current restrictions in certain places, we've got an extra amount of traffic that's going on up here. And generally speaking, we're okay with folks that are coming here as long as they're cooperative on our on our safety issues," said John Pistono, a Teton Pass ambassador.

Some of those safety issues are keeping six ft apart, skiing conservatively and wearing ski masks when near others.

Pistono said while it's good that people are getting outside, but they should abide to current nationwide restrictions especially in the most congested area: the parking lot.

"The parking lot is totally full with about 12 cars with waiting for spots. And because some people will approach one another a little too closely to figure out who's next to get in line, you get some aggressive conversation. And so, we would like to minimize those as much as possible," he said.

Pistano said if people don't abide by these rules, it is possible that the area will close. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park closed to visitors last week.

Just this weekend, the Town of Jackson issued a stay at home order for all residents and Teton county a stay at home order for those at risk or over 65 years old.
