Art 321 Hosts The Wyoming Creative Collectives Exhibit

Casper-based nonprofit arts incubator ART 321 is hosting the Wyoming Creative Collectives Exhibit for the first time this month.

It features six Wyoming-based artist collectives - The Wyoming Art Party and The Creative Indigenous Collective were invited collectives, while The Laramie Artists Project, Sequencing Through Time and Place, The Pipeline Art Project, and ThANG, were chosen from an open call. Each one showcases the ways in which they collaborated to create inspiring works of art for the public to experience.

Tyler Cessor, the organization's executive director, said that Collective exhibits are common in the art world. But reflecting on how art has been used to address social change helped him bring the Creative Collectives exhibit to life at ART 321.

"We just saw the way that artists organized in collectives, and advocate for each other or, advocate for social issues, is really powerful," said Cessor. "And in the time of COVID, it's also a way for us to endure some pretty challenging times in community with one another."

ART 321 supports artists and the creative community in Wyoming. Through its gallery and learning programs, the incubator provides opportunities for artists and community members to learn, create, and connect through the arts. The hope is that through this exhibit, ART 321 can inspire more artists to form collectives of mutual support and collaboration.

Cessor hopes this exhibit can inspire more artists to form collectives. "In Wyoming, it can be challenging to witness different types of art," Cessor said. "We might be able to see a lot of landscapes - that we have a lot of access to. But being able to see arts as a vehicle for social change or social commentary is not as easy for us to see in our communities. But collectives can be a vehicle for showcasing that."

Cessor hopes they can host this collective exhibit again next year. "I do think there was a really strong response to it. We got six collectives showing [their work], and it's a great way for us at ART 321 to show the work of many artists in a unique way." he said.

ART 321 will release virtual tours of the show this week and host a virtual panel discussion on January 21with members of each collective and a public Q&A. The event will be streamed on ART 321's Facebook page and website, where you can also find more information on each selected collective.
