How do different cultures record their histories? For hundreds of years, many Plains Indian tribes created pictorial calendars called winter counts. Every year, a keeper of the history drew an image on an animal hide to record the most important event that had taken place from one winter to the next.

We all know about the Civil War, but during that same time period, another historical event happened in Wyoming that very few of us know about. Until now. The Platte River Raids happened over the course of three days in July of 1864. It’s a piece of history that previously hasn’t been well documented for the present day. Historian Janelle Molony wanted to change that. She compiled all of her work into the new book ‘Emigrant Tales of the Platte River Raids.’ Molony spoke with Wyoming Public Radio’s Caitlin Tan.

Julianna Brannum is a documentary filmmaker and citizen of the Comanche Nation. She is the director of the new PBS short film “Homecoming,” which tells the story of the return of bison to Indigenous lands. The film is a companion to the recent Ken Burns documentary “The American Buffalo,” which Brannum also worked on as a consulting producer. Wyoming Public Radio’s Hannah Habermann spoke with Brannum.
