Governor Health Task Force Studies High Healthcare Costs

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Mark Gordon appointed a coronavirus task force. He's since broadened its focus to the cost of healthcare in our state.

Made up of 40 different stakeholders, including representatives from the state Department of Family Services and the Board of Pharmacy, the goal of the group is to decrease healthcare costs in the state. The governor's health and human service policy advisor Jen Davis said past governors have created a similar task force in the past with no results.

"I think we have a lot of data and a lot of information. And our hope is that we'll be able to use that to now look at how we can use that for implementation and to develop something that we can move forward with," she said.

Davis said it also has a unique perspective because of the pandemic.

"COVID has really also given us the opportunity to really look at our healthcare system to see the things that are working," said Davis. "And maybe the things that we know aren't working."

The group has narrowed down specific topics which they will dig deeper into, including aging, primary care and the service delivery system. Davis said these subcommittees will find unique ways to tackle the high healthcare cost problem.
