Q : WHAT DOES THE HD IN HD RADIO MEAN?
A: The 'HD' in 'HD Radio' is part of iBiquity Digital's brand name for its digital AM and FM radio technology. It does not mean either hybrid digital or high definition, it is simply the branding language for this new technology.
Q: HOW DOES IT WORK?
A: HD technology allows Wyoming Public Radio to broadcast a digital AND analog signal at the same time. It also allows us to multicast: to essentially “split” the digital bandwidth of the signal so we can broadcast Wyoming Public Radio on one side (HD1) and all-classical Classical Wyoming on the other (HD2.) In some areas of Wyoming we are now testing HD3. If the tests are successful we will begin airing a third, all-jazz service called Jazz Wyoming. If you purchase an HD radio you will be able to listen to the HD2 service (and HD3 in the future.) In areas where HD2 is not broadcast you will hear our signal in high quality digital sound. Your existing non-HD radios will continue to pick up our signal as before.
Q: DO I HAVE TO GET A NEW RADIO TO LISTEN TO HD AND THE ALL-CLASSICAL HD2?
A: Yes. To listen to digital WPM programming, you need an HD Radio receiver. There are many products now available at local and online consumer electronics stores. Nearly 100 different HD radio models are on the market. They include home receivers, portable personal audio products and after-market car radios. Many new cars also come with equipped with HD radios.
Q: BUT HOW DO I GET THESE NEW CHANNELS?
A: By just tuning up an HD Radio receiver dial, you will discover the new HD2 (and HD3 when they become available) channels that are offered in your area of Wyoming. If, for example, you are listening in Jackson, tune to 90.3 and your radio display will show: 90.3-1. By tuning up one click you will get Classical Wyoming HD2 and your screen will show: 90.3-2.
Q: WHERE CAN I HEAR CLASSICAL WYOMING HD2?
A: We are broadcasting Classical Wyoming HD2 in Jackson (KUWJ 90.3FM,) Casper (KUWC 91.3 FM,) and in Laramie / Cheyenne (KUWR 91.9 FM.) Classical Wyoming is also broadcast separately in Rock Springs over analog KZUW 88.5 FM and in Laramie over analog KUWY 88.5 FM. Additionally Jazz Wyoming is broadcast in Laramie over analog KUWL 90.1 FM. Q: IS THE RANGE OF HD THE SAME AS THE FM SIGNAL?
A: In some locations and for some stations it may not be quite as broad as the FM signal. In that case, if you are driving in a car with an HD radio, you might be switching back and forth between FM and HD.
Q: DOES HD RADIO HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION FEE?
A: HD Radio broadcasting is FREE; there are no subscription fees. Once you've purchased an HD Radio receiver, you can get digital WPM signals, including HD2 (and HD3 when available) multicast channels.
