On this day in 1870, a Laramie resident became the first woman to vote in a U.S. general election more than 50 years before women were granted the right to vote nationally. Louisa Swain cast her ballot because of a state law granting women equal and unrestricted voting rights with men.

Suicide rates for female veterans are more than double that of non-veteran women in the U.S – and suicide rates among female vets have also increased at a much higher rate than their male counterparts. The Sheridan VA is trying to combat those statistics by organizing more opportunities for female veterans to create community, heal and give feedback about their health care needs.

Earthside Birth and Wellness Center recently opened its doors in Cheyenne. The center is Wyoming’s first freestanding birth center, meaning that it isn’t attached to a hospital. It is currently taking clients for well-woman visits and will begin delivering babies on August 7.

Cody Regional Health is adding a new program to their Women’s Health and Nursery Department. With this addition, infants will be examined by doctors in Denver and Billings through video and audio to provide recommendations for treatment or evaluate the need to transfer them to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
