The Riverton Rescue Mission is one step closer to seeing if building a shelter for unhoused members in the community might be possible. The group set out to raise $25,000 to fund a study to better understand if building a shelter would be feasible – and now that goal has turned into a reality.

Last winter, a fifty-two-year-old man named Richard Lonebear died of hypothermia on the streets of Riverton. Lonebear’s death highlighted the lack of options available to those without shelter in the community and has prompted clothing drives and conversations about how to provide more support. Now, community members and local care providers are trying to make sure no one else suffers the same fate.

Sheridan County officials will open warming shelters in Sheridan if need be to house those who need shelter through Dec. 23. The Wyoming Rescue Mission, the state's largest homeless shelter in Casper, is also offering shelter and warm meals to those who need them this season.

The Wyoming Rescue Mission in Casper provides a variety of services to help those who are homelessness or are experiencing other issues, such as addiction, become productive members of society. Because of its central location and what it offers, WRM is often a place that many homeless people in Wyoming eventually come to. The average length of stay is approximately 30 days.

The funds will go towards programs and services that the Mission offers, which includes addiction, mental health, and vocational initiatives in addition to three hot meals per day and laundry services, among others.
