Many emergency medical service agencies in Wyoming are struggling financially. Most have found ways to make ends meet despite rising costs and more complex expectations. But communities may have some difficult conversations ahead about how to pay for what many consider a necessary service.

Cody’s hospital recently launched the first hospital-owned medical transport program in the state. First Flight of Wyoming will serve the Greater Basin Region with medical flights out of state.

Cody Regional Health is partnering up with SCL Health out of Billings to create the first Wyoming-owned flight program. The goal is to provide higher quality and lower cost for medical patients in Northern Wyoming.

The partnership between Campbell County Health (CCH) and Sheridan Memorial Hospital was agreed to this week. Emergency medical services will begin under the new agreement on Nov. 19, which forms Wyoming Regional EMS, an LLC that will be funded by both entities but managed by CCH. This comes as many rural EMS providers nationwide are struggling financially and often find themselves short-staffed to meet demand.
