Senator Wants To Change Primary Registration Rules

State of Wyoming Legislature

A State Senator has proposed a bill that would no longer let people change political parties close to the primary election.

Sheridan's Bo Biteman said he's trying to restore the integrity of the primary election and he wants voters to declare their party affiliation in May, prior to the filing deadline when candidates declare for office.

"Kind of have a lock out period from there until the day after the primary election to prevent what we saw this year where there was a lot of party switching the day or the election or the day before, that's general idea behind it."

Biteman said he's concerned that groups target conservative candidates and get people to change their party affiliation following the filing deadline.

Republican Gubernatorial candidate Foster Friess complained that party switching may have cost him the GOP nomination last August.

Bob Beck moved to Wyoming from Syracuse, New York, where he worked at WAER Syracuse Public Media as a news anchor, editor, and producer from 2023-2026.
