Corrections Officials Hope Legislation Will Address Wyoming’s Prison Overcrowding Problem

Bob Beck
Joint Judiciary Committee discusses prison overcrowding this fall.

Wyoming's prisons are overcrowded and the problem is predicted to get much worse. The Wyoming Department of Corrections was forced to place 88 prisoners out of state this year and so the state brought in the Council of State Government's Justice Reinvestment program to try and find some solutions. The reason for the growth is that too many people are being returned to prison for probation and parole violations.

A legislative committee adopted some legislation that could address this issue. Bob Lampert is the Director of the Wyoming Department of Corrections and Steve Lindley is his Deputy Director. They both join Bob Beck to discuss the issue and Mr. Lindley describes the problem.

Bob Beck moved to Wyoming from Syracuse, New York, where he worked at WAER Syracuse Public Media as a news anchor, editor, and producer from 2023-2026. While at WAER, Beck was awarded the Syracuse Press Club-Best Public Affairs Program for 2025. Bob Beck also taught radio news for the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in New York.
