Life Experience Guides New Native American Program Advisor To Help Tribal UW Students

University of Wyoming

After years of going without one, the University of Wyoming has hired a new Native American Program Advisor. President Laurie Nichols has said the goal is to try to increase the Native student enrollment so that it better reflects the Native population in the state.

Right now, it’s at an all-time low with less than 90 Native American students at UW. Many tribal students say that’s because the campus isn’t as welcoming as it could be or have the services they need. But that may turn around now that Reinette Tendore is stationed—door open wide—at the Native American Center on campus.

She shares her own personal story of struggle as a student at the University of Wyoming.

Melodie Edwards is the host and producer of WPM's award-winning podcast The Modern West. Her Ghost Town(ing) series looks at rural despair and resilience through the lens of her hometown of Walden, Colorado. She has been a radio reporter at WPM since 2013, covering topics from wildlife to Native American issues to agriculture.
