The city of Gillette will host the National Curling Arena Championships in April of 2020, the first time a major curling event will take place in Wyoming.

The games will be played in the CAM-PLEX's Wyoming Center Spirit Ice Hall.

Rick Mansur, executive director of the Campbell County Parks and Recreation Department, said the selection committee was impressed by many factors including the facilities.

"They just were impressed with the seating out there, that it's up above so, as spectators are watching curling, you'll be able to get a really good view," he said. "But I think they were really impressed with the staff that we had and how committed they were to curling."

Parks superintendent for Campbell County, Kevin Geer, said the biggest thing they'll have to prepare for is the specific kind of ice needed for curling, but the national representatives will be there to help.

"The USA Curling organization bring in their professional ice team, and they will actually take over our rink. So once the ice is set, they come in and they do all the fine tuning and setting up the sheets," he said.

Arena curling competitions are different than other curling competitions since they're usually played in a traditional curling-only facility.

Several representatives from Campbell County will attend this year's championship in West Chester, PA, to learn more about how to prepare for the event.
