Webinar Explores How To Have Better Discussions About The American West

Sarah Marino

The American West is a complex landscape where many cultures and ethnic groups live together.

A series of webinars sponsored by Dartmouth University and Harvard University are exploring the myth of the American West and how it affects small towns. Scholars involved with the project want to demystify the American West and have better discussion about how to build communities of support.

Cory Tucker-Price, official title with Dartmouth, is one of the moderators for the webinars. She said that it's important to have discussions about the American West's racism problem from both a current and historical vantage point.

"I came to this project with a deep interest with connecting with other scholars who are thinking about the American west in relation to not only there work but how to think about it in a contemporary context," Tucker-Price said.

Daniel Grant is a post-doc fellow at Harvard, and is the other moderator for the panel. He said that the American West is diverse and complex. And the dynamics of this appear in interesting ways.

"The American West is this increasingly and historically racially diverse region. This multiracial meeting ground that has served as a crucible for broader conversations about race and landscape across the entire nation," he said.

The first webinar is on April 7. Information on registration can be found here.
