How do different cultures record their histories? For hundreds of years, many Plains Indian tribes created pictorial calendars called winter counts. Every year, a keeper of the history drew an image on an animal hide to record the most important event that had taken place from one winter to the next.

Jed Meunier, a research scientist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, is presenting the lecture “Fire, Climate Change & Forest Resilience in Sub-boreal Forests," which examines fire ecology in northern sub-boreal forests and makes comparisons to the West, boreal, and other forests regarding global climate change regulation and forest management. It's part of the college's 2022 Museum of Discovery Science Lecture series.

"The 1906-08 Ute Journey Across Wyoming," is part of the college's Thickman Faculty Lecture series and is hosted by the Sheridan College Foundation and funded by the Thickman Lecture Endowment. The event is free and open to the public.

"Celebrate the Arts" was launched about 20 years ago as a sculpture-based event but has since branched out to include the literary, visual, and performing arts. They've attracted hundreds of people each year and are hosted at sites throughout the county. The festivities begin Thursday, Aug. 25 and run through Sunday, Aug. 28.

This will be the first time the event has been held in Wyoming. Hemingway visited the state on many occasions during his lifetime and wrote some of his most famous works here, including 'A Farewell to Arms.' He also married his third wife at the Union Pacific depot in Cheyenne in 1940. The Hemingway Society, which has hosted conferences every two years since 1980, is sponsoring the event.

SCA's first tournament will be held at Sheridan College and will feature competitors of all skill levels from beginners to Grandmasters. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top finishers in two different divisions.
