Wyoming has 80 food deserts in 21 counties. That’s when people live more than ten miles from a grocery store. But it’s a relatively new problem, according to a recent article in The Atlantic magazine.

Nevada has the second-highest grocery prices in the nation, with Colorado and New Mexico also placing in the top 10. High prices mean local food banks are having to help fill in the gaps for many working families.

Most consumers in the Mountain West spent more on groceries this month due to an increase in prices. There’s a good chance they’ll spend even more soon.

As Wyoming deals with inflation at a 40-year high, the Food Bank of Wyoming is making sure to have food available for Wyoming families in need. Rachel Bailey, Food Bank of Wyoming’s executive director, said there are more families going hungry this year.

A union representing workers at both Kroger and Albertsons locations in Colorado and Wyoming, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7, called the announcement “devastating." General council for the union Matt Shechter said he’s been getting calls from members worried about store consolidation, layoffs and rising food prices.

Union President Marc Perrone said the number of those members infected or known to have been exposed to the virus has increased by 200% in five weeks.
