Jan. 5 marked 100 years since the first woman was sworn in as a governor in the United States. Wyoming’s Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected governor in 1924 after her husband died unexpectedly in the middle of his term. The Democratic Party nominated Nellie to take his place.

Jan. 5 is Nellie Tayloe Ross Day. It recognizes the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of the nation’s first female Governor. The holiday came to be because of a Green River High School senior government class.

LGBTQ+ protections vary greatly across the state. A handful of cities have non-discrimination ordinances, some have human rights commissions, others report hate crimes to the FBI. It can be difficult to track all these moving parts, which is why the Human Rights Campaign publishes annual scorecards for more than 500 cities in the United States — including seven cities in Wyoming. These scores can give a sense of where a city stands when it comes to LGBTQ+ protections, but they don’t paint the full picture.

For the past two years, South Dakota and Wyoming's National Guards have piloted a new sexual assault response training program. The Buddy Aid training program was developed by a Major of the South Dakota Army National Guard after she witnessed sexual violence in Afghanistan in 2013. Wyoming National Guard Master Sgt. Rebecca Motley brought the pilot program to the state's Army Guard in 2019. Motley told Wyoming Public Radio's Kamila Kudelska that her own experience made her realize the importance of this type of training.
