University Of Wyoming Teton STEM Academy Will 'Travel To Mars' This Summer

Teton STEM Academy Camp Staff

This summer, the University of Wyoming will host the Teton STEM Academy, a science camp for high school students. The camp is free of charge and will be held in person from July 10 to 18.

Chip Kobulnicky, a UW astronomy professor and co-director of the Teton STEM Academy, said the camp aims to show students all of the scientific disciplines.

"We will cover life science, the physical sciences, math and engineering," he said. "We wrap up all of these themes under a general heading of planning a journey to Mars."

Kobulnicky said a journey to Mars involves conquering all kinds of different science challenges.

"We will take a couple hikes in the local forest and collect soil and water samples and analyze those in the laboratory using microscopes," he said. "We'll also take a field trip to our Wyoming Infrared Observatory research telescope."

The science camp will be in-person on the UW campus. Kobulnicky said participants will stay in dorms and learn about university life.

Students still have time to apply for the camp on the Wyoming Space Grant Consortium website.
