A Laramie group has released an autopsy report that says Albany County Sheriff's Corporal Derek Colling shot unarmed Robbie Ramirez three times, including two shots to the back. The incident occurred on November 4, 2018.
The report was obtained by the Ramirez family and then released by Albany County for Proper Policing on their website. ACoPP's Karlee Provenza said she hopes the autopsy helps to ignite a conversation about a need for more community oversight when it comes to policing.
"It's important that people understand what happened because the community lost someone. We lost someone in our community and that person was taken from us by someone who was supposed to serve and protect the same community," said Provenza.
She said the group released the report because they believe Albany County officials have not been transparent about the issue. She said it's important that people know what happened.
"If it upsets the public that Robbie was shot twice in the back then they need to let officials know that and say, 'look we're not ok with this. You need to either communicate why this is ok in your office or do something about it,'" she said.
Wyoming Public Radio reached out to Albany County Sheriff Dave O'Malley for information about how his department is reviewing the incident. Through email, he explained that Tom Thompson, the legal counsel representing Albany County has advised against any public statements.
