Archives On The Air 185: Leader Of The Eastern Shoshone, Chief Washakie—AHC Collections

Chief Washakie was leader of the Eastern Shoshone from the 1840s until his death in 1900.

He exhibited bravery, skills as an orator and diplomat, and a belief in the importance of education.

A letter from Ada Jones, who lived on the Shoshone Agency, offers us a description of the man dating to 1885. She writes, "Washakie, the Shoshone chief is what may be called a remarkable man. He is about seventy years old. So tall. Has a fine open countenance which becomes so animated and expressive when he speaks that it is a real pleasure to look at him. His eyes also seem to speak and convey more than words. And when he smiles it is like casting a ray of soft clear light on a pretty picture."
