The 4th annual Local Fest is moving from Pinedale to Lander this year. The festival is a celebration of Wyoming foods. It starts today with a free film festival at the Lander Public Library and runs through this weekend.
Steve Doyle is a Riverton farmer who helped organize the event. He says this year’s event will be longer and more intensive than in the past. He says there are lots of success stories around the state.
“We have a dairy from Recluse, Wyoming who will be talking about his raw milk dairy,” Doyle says. “We have a biodynamic truck gardener from Lost Cabin. It’s a diversity of operations, enterprises and people who will be presenting their strategies.”
Doyle says the keynote speakers are nationally-renowned ranchers and veterinarians who will discuss raising cattle with fewer antibiotics and more pasture feeding. The festival will include numerous workshops for aspiring entrepreneurs and backyard homesteaders. Some of the topics are “how to talk to your butcher” and “how to make nutrient-rich soup broths.”
But Doyle says the highlight of the festival will be a gala dinner on Friday night serving local foods made by local chefs.
“We have lots of farmers who are providing their produce to this event and presenting it at the gala event on Friday night. We’ll learn a lot about what is available in the middle of October in Wyoming.”
