Online Book Reading Will Explore Voices Of The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation

On Wednesday, August 12, a virtual reading will feature authors of the new book, Voices of Yellowstone's Capstone: A Narrative Atlas of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness

The book includes stories of the wilderness area just north of Yellowstone National Park. It compiles stories from 30 authors and as many artists.

Traute Parrie, a co-editor, said most people know about grizzly bears, but there’s so much more to the area.

"It's important to know, for one thing, how humans have been effective and engaged with this landscape on a daily basis for thousands of years," Parrie said. "But also understand our roles in protecting this wilderness now in engaging with this wilderness."

Authors tell the tale of the Rocky Mountain Locust, pikas, mushrooms, foxes, trout and so many more parts of the wilderness. Parrie said the idea is to invite people to explore intellectual trails.

"I think this book will be a book that invites readers and captures them with the consistency of the richly illustrated maps, but then the drawings bring you in, and you learn a little bit more about the resources and become hopefully more connected to the landscape and interested in becoming stewards of this landscape," said Parrie.

The event hosted by the Draper Natural History Museum begins at noon on Wednesday and can be found here. All book proceeds from the sales of the book go to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation.
