Laramie County Community College is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights for allegedly discriminating on the basis of sex in its response to a complaint of sexual violence. Representatives from the Office for Civil Rights were scheduled to appear on campus September 13 and 14.
The original complaint of sexual violence was filed during the spring semester of 2015. According to an email sent to students last week, LCCC was informed in February 2016 that the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights had opened a Title IX investigation.
The email said the Office for Civil Rights then requested college records and scheduled meetings with specific administrators, faculty, and staff. The office also arranged student focus groups to get their perspective on the college’s efforts to stop sexual violence and discrimination.
In the email, LCCC’s Vice President for Student Services Judy Hay said she pledged on behalf of the entire college a full cooperation with the Office for Civil Rights. LCCC declined to comment to Wyoming Public Radio.
LCCC is one of 212 postsecondary institutions with pending sexual violence investigations across the country.
