Deadline Extended For Public To Weigh In On Education Governance

The Legislature’s Joint Education Committee has extended the deadline for public input in its study of education governance in Wyoming after receiving almost 1,300 responses.

Under direction from the Legislature’s Management Council, the Committee hired a consulting group in June to survey Wyomingites on what changes should be made to how the state runs its public schools. The firm has interviewed stakeholders and solicited input from the public with an online survey.

The Legislative Analysts’ Office School Finance Manager Dave Nelson says he’s pleased with the number and variety of survey responses.

“We've had a good broad representation of the public,” Nelson says. “Roughly 25, 28 percent are teachers. Another 24, 25 percent are parents. So, we’re quite pleased with what we’ve seen so far.”

Nelson predicts the results will play a large role in the Committee’s report

“The Legislature and the Committee were very interested in attaining and doing what they could to generate public input into this study," he says. "So I think it will heavily on their considerations. And it will certainly be a large component of the September meeting.”

Consultants will next report to the Joint Education Committee September 10, and a final report is due October 1.

The survey can be completed online at the Legislature’s website—now until August 22.
