Maestro Gerard Schwarz raises his baton at the University of Wyoming. The former Seattle Symphony Orchestra director has 13 Grammy nominations and two Emmy wins to his credit, among numerous other awards. Tonight (Feb. 6), he’ll conduct three university ensembles in a public performance at the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 PM. UW music department chair Theresa Bogard says Schwarz is honing the student groups’ sound.

“I think it’s very exciting for them to work with one of the top-flight conductors in the world right now. And it gives them an experience of what’s it’s like to be a professional and to work with a professional in that kind of a setting.”

Tonight's 'Kaleidoscope Concert' will include one of Schwarz's own compositions as well as a piece by UW professor Anne Guzzo, as well as music by Brahms, Verdi, and others.

As an Eminent Artist in Residence, supported by the Wyoming Excellence Fund, Schwarz will also lead the university’s first annual conducting symposium. He’ll work one-on-one with conductors from public schools around state. Bogard says the goal is for UW to become a cultural hub for all of Wyoming.
