This summer, Wyoming Wildflower Women started offering daylong introductory programs and outings for activities like rock climbing and caving. The adventures are part of Wyoming State Parks’ efforts to empower women to get outside and explore, and are also part of a collaboration with Shoshone and Arapaho Fish and Game to increase opportunities for Indigenous women.

On a sunny May morning, more than a 100 fifth graders played and explored in an open grassy clearing, surrounded by pine trees on the banks of the rushing Buffalo Fork River. They were attending the annual Blackrock Field Camp, a two-day educational event put on by the U.S. Forest Service each year for students from elementary schools on the Wind River Reservation.

The National Outdoor Leadership School is a wilderness-focused school that leads immersive expeditions in Wyoming and around the world. Earlier in March, NOLS President Sandy Colhoun shared that the school will be making significant changes to address its financial challenges in a letter posted on the organization’s website.

The Wyoming Department of Education and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder recently launched the initiative, which is being introduced in several areas throughout the state to get more preschool and kindergarten students outdoors and involved in nature-based education.

One of the hardest endurance adventure races in the lower 48 is right here in Wyoming, in the Wind River Mountains. Due to an extreme winter storm, this year was the hardest version of the race to date.

The program was launched in 2021 when two of ranger positions were created, a first for the state. Visitation at Wyoming state parks and historic sites has been on the rise in recent years. This can partly be attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic and the desire to go outdoors. Offerings for LGBTQ and Latino youth, in addition to female-oriented camping trips are also part of their offerings. Other ranger programs aimed specifically at young people are also set to debut this year.
