The timber transport pilot project will allow for logs that have been burned in wildfires in northern California to be transported to Neiman Enterprises' Hulett sawmill facility via rail and truck in an effort to supplement the local forest products industry. It comes after officials with the Black Hills National Forest have reduced the amount of timber that can be harvested locally to achieve more ecologically desirable conditions.

Neiman Enterprises operates sawmills in four states and employs approximately 250 workers at their Hulett and Spearfish, South Dakota facilities. The Black Hills National Forest has reduced the amount of timber available for sale for commercial logging operations, which led to the closure of their Hill City, South Dakota facility last year.
