Two University of Wyoming (UW) researchers wanted to understand how Wyomingites feel about the future of energy, including their perceptions and values. Selena Gerace and Jessica Western initially completed a survey of residents back in 2019. Gerace and Western decided to offer an updated version of the survey in 2022. Vegetation and insects are doing relatively well out in the Jonah Field in Sublette County, according to new research funded by the University of Wyoming.Researchers looked at 12 well pads undergoing reclamation in the Jonah Field, which is where much of Wyoming’s natural gas industry boomed in the early 2000s. The well pads were planted with native grass and flower seed mixes between 2014 and 2016.

The U.S. Department of the Interior announced more than $20 billion was generated from U.S. energy production on federal land during fiscal year 2022 and renewables played a significant role.Wyoming brought in more than $1.6 billion from energy production on federal land over the last year, with the majority of the money coming from oil and gas production. For comparison, in fiscal year 2021 the revenue from Wyoming was about $1 billion.

Shipments of coal to U.S. power plants fell significantly over the last decade, which is notable for Wyoming as its the top producer of coal in the country.The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released new data showing that from 2010 to 2021 coal shipments to U.S. power plants fell by about half.
