In the City of West Hollywood, Saturday June 24th, 2012, was John Angelo Day. It was John Angelo's 90th birthday and was celebrated by the city he had lived in for over 60 years.
John Angelo was a dancer, actor and choreographer. He performed in movie musicals including Singing in the Rain and An American In Paris. He moved to West Hollywood in 1950 and fell in love with the city. Angelo's first apartment in West Hollywood cost only $60 a month, the equivalent of $570 today. Today, a similar apartment in West Hollywood would cost over $2,000.
Angelo was a prominent member of the LGBT community in West Hollywood and was especially interested in LGBT communities in Asia. Angelo practiced the Bahá'í faith, which believes all religions are valid and all people are equal.
In his 70s, Angelo worked as a set designer and produced public access television shows. He hosted the public access show The John Angelo Interviews.
John Angelo's collection at the UW American Heritage Center includes scripts, posters from musicals and information about LGBT communities.
