Ed Buchanan Holds On To Secretary Of State Office

Ed Buchanan will continue his stint as Wyoming's Secretary of State. Buchanan has held the office since March when he was chosen to fill the unfinished term of Ed Murray.

Buchanan is an attorney by trade and he said so far his time in office has made him realize Wyoming needs to revise its election code.

"Just in this election cycle alone I've identified issues that the statute does not address so that's going to be the next thing that I take on," said Buchanan.

One example he mentioned was a state house candidate from Sweetwater County who withdrew from the race a week before the election.

"It's too late to take the candidate off the ballot, so what happens to the votes they get?" Buchanan said. He added that the current statue doesn't have a solution.

Another issue Buchanan said he will be working on is finding a sweet spot with the legislature on business fees.

"In this budget climate the legislature wants to raise more revenue and the secretary state office is a place that contributes millions of dollars to the general fund," Buchanan said.

But he said the low fees make Wyoming one of the most business-friendly states in the country and that can't be lost.

In order to further diversify the state's economy, Buchanan said his office needs to focus on making sure communities have basic infrastructures like water and emergency services to support new businesses.
