During an election season, people often doubt how much their votes count. But according to a new study by WalletHub.com, voters in Wyoming have more influence than any other voters in the country. Spokesperson Jill Gonzalez says that’s because Wyoming has the lowest population of any state and rural states with low populations still have the same number of senators as other more urban states.
“You know, take California for instance. Its estimated population is nearly 66 times greater than Wyoming’s. Yet still has the same number of senators. So in this case, less is going to be more, at least population wise.”
Gonzalez says each state gets two senators, no matter its population size. She says it also gives an advantage to more conservative states.
“We did see that red states have more powerful votes than blue states. And that’s because a lot of those smaller states right now are more conservative so they do have a slight advantage.”
The other states to top the list were Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota and Rhode Island.
