Three abortion-related bills pass Wyoming legislative committees

Wyoming State Legislature

The Wyoming House and Senate will consider three abortion-related bills after they were approved by legislative committees.

The House Health and Labor Committee approvedHouse Bill 149 that bans abortions because of the possibility that the child, fetus or embryo could have a disability or other selective reasons. It also approved House Bill 92that bans abortions in Wyoming if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade.

The Senate Health and Labor Committee voted to approveSenate File 83, which bans the use of drugs to perform chemical abortions. Jackson Dr. Katie Noyes told the committee it was overstepping its bounds.

“That sacred space for patients to ask their questions and do what’s best for them need not be interfered with by the state of Wyoming,” said Noyes.

Some other medical providers noted the drugs used for abortions are also used for other procedures and feared they could become hard to get if the law passes. But committee members noted that the legislation specifically says they are only banned for abortions. The bills now go to the House and Senate floor for further consideration.
