Powell High School students and teachers say they might have a solution to prevent irrigation tunnel collapse like the one in Goshen County over the summer.
For Powell High School technology teacher Joel Hayano the irrigation collapse in Goshen County was personal. He's originally from Torrington and knows families who were impacted saw how it impacted the community. That's why his classroom decided to tackle the issue.
"Using the drones is the perfect avenue for that. They'd be able to fly over all the waterways, and with the help of some other people that we've contacted, they would just kind of guide us through how to do that.
But there was one problem, the drones Powell High School currently have are outdated. They applied for the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow contest and are now one of the finalists in the state.
If Powell wins, they will receive $15,000 in technology and supply. Hayano said they will use this money to buy updated drones and other equipment needed for the project. Those drones will be the ones that flies over irrigation structures and waterways to make sure everything looks good.
The school will find out on December 23 if Powell advances to be a state winner.
