NOISE - Lander

NOISE - Lander

Endurance artist Oakley Boycott of Lander presents NOISE, the final installment of an ongoing endurance art trilogy that invites all Wyomingites to explore true freedom of expression in an immersive endurance art installation. Held in the Carnegie Room at the Fremont County Public Library in Lander, NOISE will create a space where all community members can openly express themselves—speak, scream, rage, yell, or remain silent—with no repercussions. This open-forum performance, echoing Boycott’s previous works of SILENCE and ECHO, is meant to delve into the tensions of public vs internal voice integrated with community mental health while preserving participant anonymity.

For three consecutive days, Boycott will remain seated in a one-way mirrored chamber from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day, in “active stillness” with no breaks. Participants can enter into a blackout chamber in opposition to Boycott; fully in control of their own anonymity of being witnessed but not visible.

Within this intimate setup, each person’s voice or silence will contribute to an evolving, recorded soundscape capturing the diversity of raw expression of communal zeitgeist. There is also an “white noise” audio option to ensure participants anonymity. All participants must sign a waiver prior to entry. Waiver includes protective clause for participants.

This 24 hour community soundscape will eventually be paired with a series of 24 “rage portraits” by Lander photographer, Mei Ratz in an exhibition opening in 2025. This exhibit of NOISE will highlight the importance of open expression in civic spaces. NOISE will be moderated by humanities scholar and NOISE production consultant, Anne Mason of Laramie.

With support from current candidates running for public office leaders and elected officials, NOISE is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to arrive with an open mind and willingness to confront their own voice, whether quietly or boldly.

As Boycott notes, “NOISE is not a solution. But, it is my hope that by building a temporary external container for the complexities of our internal worlds that we can metabolize our truths in healthier ways. NOISE is a communal act of engaging with what true freedom of speech can feel like. Instead of putting all of our internal “noise” on each other, why not put it here? Where you can’t get in trouble. Where maybe rage is our common ground. Where it’s impossible to hurt my feelings. Where you can be witnessed in your authenticity while also in charge of your own anonymity. I dare you to express your truth.”

NOISE is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Wyomingites to confront individual and collective feelings around freedom of expression and mental health in today’s sociopolitical climate.
