Around Wyoming, Friday, August 21

An animal rescue will be able to extend its reach in the community thanks to generous donors. The Guernsey Gazette reports Kindness Ranch signed up for WyoGives for the first time this year. The 24 hour statewide fundraising event brought in more than the rescue was hoping for. The funds will be used for a mobile vet clinic that will provide lower cost spay and neuter services. The rescue also plans to start a trap-and-neuter program for feral animals with the mobile clinic.

Gillette had a furry visitor come through town. The Gillette News Record reports Game and Fish relocated a young black bear. It was the second time the bear had stopped by for a visit. Officials say drought is causing wildlife to travel widely to find food and water. Thanks to quick reporting of this bear, the department had more options available for how to deal with it.

A rare bird made a longer-than-planned stop in Laramie before heading off on its next adventure. A broad-winged hawk was found on the University of Wyoming (UW) campus, thin, with a fractured beak. It was quickly captured and brought to the Teton Raptor Center in Wilson. There, it got patched up and in flying shape again. It was released from the UW campus. Broad-winged hawks aren’t common in the area, and it’s not quite clear why the hawk came through or where it’ll go next.
