Around Wyoming brings you news from around the state, keeping you informed with brief updates of stories you may have missed.

Around Wyoming, Thursday, May 1

A bird of prey was recently spotted a bit out of his normal habitat. WyoFile reports goshawks are normally found in forests. And yet, an adult male bird was seen perched in the town of Pinedale, surrounded by a sagebrush sea. According to officials, he was probably there to snag an easy snack of city critters.

Some other creatures are celebrating a new home thanks to some local students. The University of Wyoming Biodiversity Institute’s ambassador animals received new habitat enclosures that eleven students in the Empowering Youth in Herpetology Conservation program helped create and build. They also learned about and worked with some of Wyoming’s reptiles and amphibians, and grew native plants from seed to put in the ambassador animals’ new homes.

Some other students in the state will now get their shot at growing plants. The Sheridan Press reports Clearmont K-12 School recently completed its brand new greenhouse. Students requested one a few years ago, and it’s been in the works ever since. Students are already using it to learn about growing food.

And, according to restaurant furniture manufacturer Affordable Seating, Wyomingites are the fifth most coffee obsessed in the country.

Ivy started as a science news intern in the summer of 2019 and has been hooked on broadcast ever since. Her internship was supported by the Wyoming EPSCoR Summer Science Journalism Internship program. In the spring of 2020, she virtually graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.S. in biology with minors in journalism and business. When she’s not writing for WPR, she enjoys baking, reading, playing with her dog, and caring for her many plants.
