Suicide rates for female veterans are more than double that of non-veteran women in the U.S – and suicide rates among female vets have also increased at a much higher rate than their male counterparts. The Sheridan VA is trying to combat those statistics by organizing more opportunities for female veterans to create community, heal and give feedback about their health care needs.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough wants Wyoming veterans to know that the agency is there for them. While on a trip around the state at the end of February, McDonough met with veterans, families and staff at the VA Medical Center in Sheridan to connect about how to better support those who have served.

The awareness efforts are aimed at veterans in rural areas and those who are traveling with telehealth, mental health, and other resources to access VA care. Informational flyers are being posted at rest areas and eateries throughout the state to help with these efforts.

There are currently about 60 nursing positions that VA officials are seeking to fill, both in Sheridan and in their outpatient clinics.

Mission Daybreak is a 10 year, $20 million initiative launched by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that seeks to build connections between the VA and outside providers through a comprehensive, public health approach that integrates researchers, clinicians, health innovators, veterans, and service members in local communities in an effort to reduce suicides.
