The timber transport pilot project will allow for logs that have been burned in wildfires in northern California to be transported to Neiman Enterprises' Hulett sawmill facility via rail and truck in an effort to supplement the local forest products industry. It comes after officials with the Black Hills National Forest have reduced the amount of timber that can be harvested locally to achieve more ecologically desirable conditions.

The Wyoming Game & Fish Department recently approved a permit that allows for twice the number of deer than normal to be culled in response to rising chronic wasting disease (CWD) rates in city limits and the Black Hills region. The city has applied for a deer culling permit in previous years to reduce conflicts between residents and deer, though this wasn't related to concerns over CWD.

Neiman Enterprises operates sawmills in four states and employs approximately 250 workers at their Hulett and Spearfish, South Dakota facilities. The Black Hills National Forest has reduced the amount of timber available for sale for commercial logging operations, which led to the closure of their Hill City, South Dakota facility last year.

The decision comes after a report released last year by the Forest Service advised for a reduction in the number of trees that are released for commercial operations in an effort to provide a recovery period for future harvest levels. The local timber and forest products industry has since felt the impact of this reduction and has also raised questions about its future in the Black Hills region.
