Museum Minute: Lakota American Motif Dress

Plains Indian Museum

Kate Fools Crow was Lakota and the wife of the renowned spiritual leader Frank Fools Crow. Kate made a dress sometime in the 1970s that had American themes.

Hunter Old Elk, the Plains Indian Museum curatorial assistant, said there are beautiful American flag motifs all over the dress. But something else got Old Elk even more excited.

“This dress has pockets,” he said. “For the few pieces of Plains clothing that you have, you rarely see women's dresses that depict these and anybody who's ever bought a piece of clothing expecting it to have pockets knows how excited I was when I saw this.”
