The Sheridan City Council recently approved $4,880 to assist in the development of an in-town trail extension.
The Sheridan Community Land Trust asked for financial help to build a trail through Kendrick Golf Course that would connect to the Soldier Ridge Trail system located on the west end of Sheridan.
That trail system also connects to the city's pathway system.
The Land Trust's Executive Director Brad Bauer said the Slice Trail would allow hiking and biking, though no horseback riding. He said the city funding will go towards signage, dog waste stations and building the trail.
"The funding that the city is providing for the Slice connector trail will be used to purchase and install bicycle roller guards that allow bicycle users on the trail to go through fence lines without getting off their bike," he said.
Chris Vrba, marketing director for the Land Trust, said the partnership with the city is valuable.
"We can all work together to create values and activities and amenities and services that folks in the city of Sheridan and Sheridan County want," he said.
Bauer said Slice Trail will be the land trust's first priority for the trail building season in spring. From there, the Land Trust will begin work on Kicking Horse Trail, another trail that will help to join Soldier Ridge together. They hope to finish Kicking Horse by mid-to-late summer.
