Officials say the Squirrel Creek fire in Southeastern Wyoming was started by people. The ongoing investigation involves the Forest Service, Sheriff’s Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, as well as the U-S Attorney’s office.
Forest Service spokesman, Aaron Voos, says it’s a criminal investigation that could carry significant repercussions if someone is convicted.
"There’s going to be a significant bill associated with this fire. There is precedent in the past for folks that are responsible for starting fires to be liable for those damages and for some of that cost, and so that’s a certain possibility. Jail time obviously is a certain possibility. I mean this is no small matter. "
Voos says it’s safe to assume that there are multiple suspects, but no arrests have been made.
