BLM Seeks Public Input For Wild Horse Gather

Public Domain

The Bureau of Land Management is asking for public comment on a proposed removal of wild horses in the Checkerboard area near Rock Springs.

In a press release, the Bureau of Land Management said they expect wild horses in the three herd management areas of the Checkerboard to become overpopulated in 2017, and a removal of more than 1,000 horses may be needed to reach the appropriate population levels.

Before the BLM can gather wild horses on public land, they are required to prepare an environmental assessment, or EA, about the potential ecological consequences of the gather, and how they can lessen or prevent harmful impacts. In a press release, the BLM said they will use public comment to help develop their EA.

Public input will be accepted until April 4, and may be e-mailed to blm_wy_adobetown_saltwells_hma@blm.gov, with “2017 AML Gather” in the subject line. It may also be mailed to BLM Rock Springs Field Office, 2017 AML Gather, 280 Highway 191 North, Rock Springs, WY 82901, or hand delivered during regular business hours.
