State-Wide Cycling Plan Ready For Public Comment

The public comment period is open on a draft report, which discusses improvements to cycling and pedestrian paths throughout Wyoming.

The Wyoming Bicycle and Pedestrian System Task Force, was appointed by Governor Matt Mead earlier this year, and will rely the public’s input as a guide for the final draft of the report.

Tim Young, the chairman for the task force, said the goal is to hear Wyomingites’ opinions on the different types of trails and paths they would like to see.

“Improving our bicycling and walking trails opportunities actually improves public health. That could be a tremendous improvement of quality of life for Wyoming. Another one is to look at the economic benefits. These types of community enhancements tend to be the types of things that attract new businesses,” said Young.

Young said that the task force proposes building more national routes through the state, like the Trans-America Trail, Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and Medicine Bow Rails-to-Trails, in hopes of boosting tourism. He said an increase in foot and bicycle traffic could help local businesses and downtowns.

“Communities in Wyoming can accomplish beneficial projects. Biking trails close to home, improve their pathways, improve downtown main street walkability and business climates. You know, we’re still at the beginning part, so public comments, input is really welcome and very useful at this point,” said Young.

The final report is due October 1, 2017. The current draft plan is available for review here.
