Public Meeting Discusses Future Of Medical Marijuana

Wyoming NORML and Wyoming Purple Cross, medical marijuana advocate groups in the state, are hosting a public meeting to discuss the Peggy A. Kelly Wyoming Cannabis Act. Right now, the groups are working to get enough signatures to put the issue on the 2017 ballot. This would allow voters to decide whether or not to legalize medical marijuana in the state.

“Honestly more than anything else, the biggest reason that I feel it is important is the people’s right,” said Scott Sidman, Wyoming NORML Deputy Director. “The people’s right to actually vote on something whether they want it or not. And getting it on the ballot is basically the whole goal in this, so people have the right to their choice.”

Sidman said the fact that cannabis and hemp are natural products are major reasons he supported the act. Wyoming NORML events coordinator Carrie Satterwhite said she wanted people to have an alternative to the medicines offered now.

“We really need a safer, much more effective drug, and that’s what Cannabis offers to the patients of Wyoming, and that’s why we’re fighting so hard for this Peggy Kelly initiative,” Satterwhite said.

The meeting is free and open to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 by teleconference. The phone number is 1–641–715–3810, and the access code is 476321.
