WYO Performing Arts And Education Center Opens In Sheridan

The WYO Theater Facebook page

The WYO Theater has been a mainstay of downtown Sheridan for decades, hosting live theater, music, and films. Now, after a series of renovations in neighboring buildings, the theater is part of the WYO Performing Arts and Education Center.

The project was dedicated earlier this month and has been years in the making. Wendy Smith, Director of Marketing & Public Information for Sheridan College, said the project, which is a partnership between Sheridan College, Whitney Benefits, and the city and state government, will bring a long list of benefits to Sheridan.

“It includes additional learning space for our college students,” said Smith. “It includes additional space for locals of all ages to learn many different performance skills, including the technical side of theater, as well as the performing side of theater.”

The center aims to expand opportunities for theater and dance, and be a regional hub for the performing arts.

“This is a great project because it demonstrates just staying power,” Smith explained. “This vision was hatched years ago and it included not just one property but three.”

The WYO Theater is now the heart of the WYO Performing Arts and Education Center, while two neighboring buildings house a black box theater and additional lobby space, among other things. Fundraising is now underway for more renovations, including executive offices and an events space.
