University of Wyoming 5th Annual Black History Month Student Research Conference

University of Wyoming 5th Annual Black History Month Student Research Conference

"What we are merely taught seldom nourishes the mind like that which we teach ourselves (Woodson, 1933)."

"Black studies attempts to combine both class and color. But this is theoretical too. Black studies taught in Yale by a white professor and attended mainly by upper-class white students will be of a different form than black studies taught in a state college by a black professor before a majority of black students (Hare, 1972)."

The University of Wyoming Black Studies Center (UWBSC) hosts its 5th Annual Student Research Conference on February 3, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. The conference theme embodies the goals and mission of the UWBSC, "Reframing the Traditional Master Narratives Through Evidence-Based Research." The conference is virtual and free to all.
Dr. Jacquelyn Bridgeman, the Director of the School of Culture, Gender, and Social Justice, will offer opening remarks. Dr. Fredrick Douglass Dixon, Director of the UWBSC, will present a tribute to the Father of Black History Month, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Richard Benson, from the University of Pittsburg, will give the keynote address.

Student presenters include Ms. Athaliah Z. Jimenez-Stedman, Ms. Kathrine Chambers, Ms. Shifa Ijaz, Ms. Madison Greenberg, Ms. Jade Reinhardt, Mr. Emmanuel Pregnon, Mr. JW Rzeszut, and Mr. Jack Small. The University of Wyoming's legal Aid Clinic will conclude the conference with a workshop presentation that centers on the historical and problematic issues of the all-white jury.
